Premchand has written more than a dozen novels and 300 short stories, highlighting patriotism, social issues, communal harmony, and humanity. In 1936, at the inaugural meeting of the Progressive Writers Association in Lucknow, he penned the presidential address in Urdu, which was later translated into Hindi and published in his own journal, ‘Hans’, His admirers, both in Urdu and Hindi, constantly try to outdo each other in asserting him as ‘their writer’. Originally, he used to write under the name of Nawab Rai and was mainly an Urdu writer, but, due to his financial condition, he started writing in Hindi as well. Dhanpat Rai Srivastav, known among his countless readers as Munshi Premchand, (1880-1936) was the forebearer of short-stories in Urdu fiction.
